The purpose of this course is to provide you with a comprehensive understanding of the fascinating realm of spirits. Through this course, you will acquire knowledge on various categories of spirits, service techniques, pairing suggestions, and commonly used terminology.
Welcome to Spirits 101, a course designed to give hospitality industry professionals an overview of the world of spirits. This course will cover the basics of spirit production, popular types of spirits, and how to properly serve them.

The course will start by introducing the fundamental concepts of distillation, including the history and science of the process. You will learn about the different types of stills used in distillation, and the factors that influence the flavor and quality of spirits, such as the type of grain used, the aging process, and the level of alcohol content.
Next, we will dive into the world of spirits, starting with whiskey. You will learn about the different types of whiskey, including bourbon, scotch, and rye, and how they differ in flavor and production. We will also cover popular whiskey cocktails and how to properly serve them.
Moving on, we will cover other popular spirits, such as vodka, gin, rum, tequila, and brandy. You will learn about their production methods, flavor profiles, and popular cocktails. We will also discuss the differences between premium and value spirits, and how to make recommendations to customers based on their preferences and budget.
Throughout the course, you will also learn about the proper techniques for serving spirits, including glassware selection, the appropriate serving temperature, and garnishing. We will also cover responsible service practices, such as identifying when a customer has had too much to drink and how to handle the situation.
By the end of this course, you will have a strong foundation in the world of spirits and be equipped with the knowledge and skills to confidently serve customers and make recommendations based on their preferences.
This course and website are developed to work on any smartphone, tablet, laptop or desktop. This training is a self-paced online course and the site tracks your progress so you are able to log-off and resume training where you left off.
